If you’re a resident of Texas, you may have asked yourself this question when reviewing your electric bill for the first time after September 1st, 2024. We’re here to help explain what’s going on with electric rates for Texas residents in the fall of 2024.
As you may be aware, a primary function of the Public Utility Commission of Texas (‘PUCT’) is reviewing and approving or disapproving all service-charge increases proposed by Texas’ many electric utility companies. In the local energy market, these charges are called ‘delivery charges.’ You’ll likely find these delivery charges on your electric bill on a line item labeled ‘TDU’ (Transmission and Distribution Utility). These charges contribute to the total amount billed to each consumer of electricity in Texas, and thanks to a fresh round of approvals from the PUCT, they’re increasing for all of Texas starting this month.
On your electric bill, you’ll see this increase in two distinct ‘TDU’ line item charges:
The ‘per-month’ delivery charge is a constant, flat rate on every bill you receive, which has historically been between $3 and $10. Starting this September, this amount will increase by a few dollars, depending on which electric utility services your local grid.
The far more significant increase that Texans will notice/feel is the higher rates ‘per kWh’ (kilowatt hour). See the chart below for September rate increases from a few of the largest electric utilities in the state.

Yes! Absolutely! Solar can help Texans lower their electricity bills, and here’s how:
Energy independence: Texans can reduce or even eliminate their reliance on grid-supplied electricity by producing clean, renewable energy on their own property. The term for this is energy independence. Generating your own electricity via a solar energy system is a great way to lock in your own low electricity cost for the ≥30-year operating life of the system—hedging yourself against the volatile Texas energy market and the continual cost escalation it produces.
Energy Storage: We live in a wondrous age of battery storage technology, and now, residential and commercial property owners have a multitude of options regarding storing their solar-cultivated energy. Property owners can either store the energy they create with their solar array and use it when needed or even SELL IT back to the grid/utility companies through solar net metering programs.
Stop asking yourself, “Why is my electric bill so high?” when you see your monthly balance. Start creating your own energy and stop leasing, renting, and buying it from utility companies!
