Spring Often Outperforms Summer for Solar Production Across Texas

It sounds logical that hotter weather should mean more solar production. After all, Houston summers bring plenty of sun/heat to compete with the hottest spots on the planet. But solar panels do not run on heat; they run on sunlight. More specifically, they convert solar irradiance into electricity, and excessive panel temperature can affect panel performance/efficiency.

Solar Panels Prefer Light, Not Excess Heat

The key concept is the temperature coefficient. Most solar panels are tested under standard conditions, and their output declines as cell temperature rises above that benchmark. A common range for crystalline silicon modules is roughly 1% power loss per degree Celsius increase in cell temperature. That may sound small, but roof-mounted panels can get much hotter than the air on a sunny Texas afternoon.

This is why solar energy production does not peak in July and August, even though those months feel most intense. A bright, hot day can still produce a lot of power, but the heat slightly reduces panel efficiency. The system keeps working, just not at the same efficiency it would have under strong sun and milder temperatures.

Now, solar panels are productive summer workers, but even they prefer not to be roasted on a roof.

Spring Often Hits a Better Balance

Spring can create excellent production conditions because several factors line up well. Days are longer than in winter, sunlight is stronger, and temperatures are often milder than in midsummer. The panels receive good irradiance with less heat-related efficiency loss.

In practical terms, a clear April or May day may produce surprisingly strong results, sometimes better than a hotter summer day with similar sun exposure.

Heat waves also affect the broader power grid, pushing demand higher as air conditioners run across the region. That does not make solar less useful. In fact, solar can still help offset daytime demand during hot periods. The point is simply that production modeling needs to account for temperature, not just sunshine.

Good Proposals Already Model the Real World

Experienced solar installers review roof orientation, tilt, shading, historical weather, module specifications, inverter behavior, and local irradiance data. They also factor in expected losses from temperature, wiring, soiling, equipment conversion, and normal degradation.

As one of the best solar companies in Texas, we want homeowners to understand both the opportunity and the limits. Solar is a strong long-term investment when expectations are built on real modeling. More heat does not automatically mean more production, and that is not bad news. It is useful information. A well-designed system in Houston can still produce strong energy yields throughout the year, which is why Texas is at the forefront of the solar gold rush.
