How Solar Degradation Really Works

The Sunshine Renewables team receives lots of questions about the lifespan of solar panels. Many people have heard of “solar degradation” but aren’t quite sure what it means in real-world terms.

The idea of panels slowly losing performance may seem concerning, but in reality, it’s a slow, predictable process, similar to the gradual dimming of a trusted lightbulb rather than a sudden burnout.

Modern solar technology has proven itself over decades, and systems installed 30 to 40 years ago are still generating around 80 percent of their original capacity. That’s impressive longevity for hardware that sits in the sun every day, quietly converting light into electricity without moving parts or constant upkeep.

Solar Degradation: What the Lab Says vs. What Happens in the Field

To understand solar degradation, it helps to start with how panels are rated. Manufacturers test them under what’s called Standard Testing Conditions (STC), essentially, a controlled lab environment with a fixed light intensity, air temperature of 25°C, and no dust or shading. Think of it as the solar equivalent of a treadmill test for performance. In the real world, though, no two roofs are alike. Heat, humidity, soiling, and other environmental factors create small differences in how panels perform over time.

Typically, there’s a minor drop in efficiency within the first year, sometimes called “light-induced degradation”, as the panel materials stabilize after exposure to sunlight. After that, the rate slows dramatically, averaging between 0.2 and 0.5 percent per year. That means even after 25 years, a system should still operate at about 85 to 90 percent of its original output, comfortably within what most solar panel warranty terms guarantee.

Panels That Stand the Test of Time

If you ever needed proof of durability, just look at the data. Systems built in the 1980s and 1990s, back when the Internet was still new and Tom Hanks ruled the box office, are still running today at around 80 percent capacity. Panels have improved, not worsened, since then. Today’s tempered glass, weather-resistant coatings, and advanced encapsulation materials have significantly reduced the risk of early wear. With periodic cleaning, preventive checks, and monitoring, solar arrays can easily deliver reliable energy for multiple decades. It’s not uncommon for commercial sites to see systems operating efficiently past 30 years with minimal intervention. Like an old incandescent bulb that “just goes and goes,” solar panels often outlast expectations, quietly providing dependable energy long after they’ve been paid off.
